TurboTax Review 2026: The Market Leader With Caveats

TurboTax is the market leader with the best UX and the highest prices. The Free Edition covers only ~37% of filers. Most people end up paying $128-$273. Genuinely best for multi-state, crypto, and high-complexity returns.

Best for Multi-state filers, crypto traders with 300+ transactions, anyone who values polish over price

Methodology & Sources

  • FTC v. Intuit Inc., Docket No. 9408 — deceptive free advertising findings

  • IRS Free File Alliance criteria, IR-2024-04

TurboTax is the best-designed tax software on the market. The wizard flow is polished, the guidance copy is excellent, the import integrations (W-2 capture, broker CSV, crypto exchange APIs) are best-in-class. It is also the most expensive product in its tier by a large margin, and its “Free Edition” is a documented bait pattern: the FTC found in FTC v. Intuit (Docket No. 9408, Jan 2024) that roughly 63% of filers who attempted TurboTax Free Edition encountered an upgrade prompt. The factual findings stand on the record even though the order was vacated procedurally.

Tax laws change annually — verify current pricing and eligibility with TurboTax directly before filing.

When TurboTax is the right call

Multi-state returns. TurboTax’s part-year resident allocation wizard is the best in class. If you worked in two states, the credit-for-taxes-paid-to-another-state calculation is handled smoothly. Add $59 per additional state.

300+ crypto transactions. TurboTax Premier integrates with CoinTracker and Koinly via API. If you have more than 300 transactions, the CSV-import pathway in TurboTax is significantly faster than manual Form 8949 entry in FreeTaxUSA.

Live CPA review. If you want an actual human to review your return before filing, TurboTax Live Assisted is the most mature product in this space. The price ($209-$273 for self-employed) is real — but so is the service.

W-2 import. The camera-scan import of physical W-2s is genuinely good. If you have 3+ W-2s from a year of job-switching, TurboTax is the fastest wizard.

When TurboTax is the wrong call

Schedule C freelancer, single state. FreeTaxUSA does exactly the same return for $14.99. TurboTax wants $188. The refund is identical.

Non-resident alien (1040-NR). TurboTax explicitly does not file Form 1040-NR. If you’re on an F-1, J-1, or H-1B visa, stop here and go to Sprintax.

S-Corp (1120-S) on a Mac. TurboTax Business (the 1120-S product) is Windows desktop only. Mac users need TaxAct Business.

Realistic Expectation — W-2 employees who itemize, multi-state filers, crypto traders

If you're a W-2 employee with a mortgage and some charitable donations, TurboTax Deluxe at $128 all-in is a reasonable pick. If you're 1099 self-employed, you're being overcharged by $173 per return vs FreeTaxUSA.

We earn significantly more from TurboTax signups than from FreeTaxUSA. This has not changed our recommendation: FreeTaxUSA is the better pick for 1099 filers.
